#13 Sammy’s Hill (Kristin Gore)

Sammy's Hill
Sammy’s Hill

In her debut novel Sammy’s Hill, Kristin Gore treats readers to an insider’s view of life and love on Capitol Hill. In fact, the view couldn’t get much more inside the Beltway, especially coming from former Vice President Al Gore’s daughter. Still, Sammy’s Hill is witty and engaging enough to prove that it’s not always who you know, but sometimes how well you tell their stories.

Samantha Joyce, Gore’s heroine, is a 26-year-old self-deprecating health-care policy advisor to Robert Gary, a well-respected senator from her home state of Ohio. Between endless work days, a grueling campaign schedule, and frequent trips to the pet store where she seeks advice on caring for her listless Japanese fighting fish, Sammy finds time to obsess over her new boyfriend, sexy speechwriter Aaron Driver. As things heat up with Aaron, Sammy’s work schedule takes on a new intensity when Gary becomes the Democratic candidate for vice president. Along the way, scandal clouds both her personal and professional life, and our heroine discovers the often salacious underbelly of life on the hill.

Gore is best-known for her work as a writer on television shows such as Saturday Night Live and Futurama, and her comedic talents certainly shine through in this first effort. While at times the banter is overly constructed, and Sammy’s neuroses can become grating at best (“…a sore throat was never just a sore throat–it was much more lively the beginning stages of Ebola, rickets, or wasting disease.”), Gore does a good job of creating a protagonist who becomes ever more likeable as the book progresses. Thrown into the mix is a delicious sprinkling of hilarious Blackberry exchanges that round out this clever contemporary political adventure.

#10: Vantro (Karin Slaughter)

Vantro
Vantro

#28: A Summer at Sea (Katie Fforde)

A Summer at Sea
A Summer at Sea

Emily is happy with her life just as it is.

She has a career as a midwife that she loves . She enjoys living on her own as a single woman. But she’s also feels it’s time for a change and a spot of some sea air.

So when her best friend Rebecca asks whether she’d like to spend the summer cooking on a ‘puffer’ boat just off the Scottish coast, she jumps at the chance.

But she barely has time to get to grips with the galley before she finds herself with a lot on her plate.

Rebecca is heavily pregnant and is thrilled to have her friend on board doing most of the work. Then there’s Emily’s competitive and jealous kitchen assistant who thinks she should be head-cook, not Emily.

And there’s Alasdair, the handsome local doctor who Emily is desperately trying not to notice.

Because if she falls in love with him, as he appears to be falling for her, will she ever want her old life back again?

#24: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Rupert Everett)

Hello Darling. Are You Working?
Hello Darling. Are You Working?

Mnja…

Kort om bogen (fra amazon.com):
British actor Rupert Everett charmed his way into moviegoers’ affections with his scene-stealing performance in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Everett is also the gifted writer of this scathingly funny novel of a down-and-out actor’s zany misadventures amid a wildly colorful menagerie of madcap trendsetters.

Fame is a fleeting thing, as ex-soap opera star Rhys Waveral discovers. When he loses all his money in the stock market and no new acting jobs are forthcoming, eviction from his elegant hotel suite looms large. Stripped of all his assets, Rhys realizes he has only one thing left to sell: himself. And a pair of jet-setting dowagers couldn’t be more thrilled. From staid English country houses to flamboyant Parisian nightclubs and an outrageous costume ball in Tangiers, Rupert Everett spins a raucous and irresistible modern farce.

#09: The Bette Davis Club (Jane Lotter)

The Bette Davis Club
The Bette Davis Club

Hmm..

The morning of her niece’s wedding, Margo Just drinks a double martini and contemplates the many mistakes she’s made in her fifty-odd years of life. Spending three decades in love with a wonderful but unattainable man is pretty high up on her list of missteps, as is a long line of unsuccessful love affairs accompanied by a seemingly endless supply of delicious cocktails.

When the young bride flees—taking with her a family heirloom and leaving behind six hundred bewildered guests—her mother offers Margo fifty grand to retrieve her spoiled brat of a daughter and the invaluable property she stole. So, together with the bride’s jilted and justifiably crabby fiancé, Margo sets out in a borrowed 1955 red MG on a cross-country chase. Along the way, none of what she discovers will be quite what she expected. But it might be exactly what she’s been seeking all along.

#07: The Atlantis Gene (A.G. Riddle)

The Atlantis Gene
The Atlantis Gene

For months, the research vessel Icefall has followed a giant iceberg that recently calved from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. When the researchers spot a mysterious structure peeking out from the crumbling ice, they dock and disembark to investigate. What they find, they never could have imagined: a labyrinth older than humanity itself and an artifact from the 20th Century that was lost–but not forgotten. The discovery sets off a chain of events thousands of years in the making.

Dr. Kate Warner has spent most of her adult life running from her past. She has also spent it searching for a cure for a medical condition she believes is an emerging global epidemic: autism. In a lab in Jakarta, Indonesia, she believes she has finally found that cure. But at the moment of her breakthrough, her world is once again shattered. Her lab is attacked, her staff assaulted, and two children in her care are abducted. The mysterious intruders leave Dr. Warner unconscious. When she awakens, she’s a murder suspect in police custody. She soon learns that her research has greater implications than she ever dreamed, and that her past is not what she’s been told. Her work holds the key to humanity’s future–for better or worse.

With time running out, Kate decides to risk everything to unravel the mystery her research has uncovered: the Atlantis Gene. Her journey takes her around the globe and deep inside a far-reaching conspiracy. The revelations that unfold will rewrite the history of human origins–and if her adversaries capture her, the future of human evolution.
